Make theatre magic! We are excited to provide more in-depth academic-based curriculum for our KIDSTAGE Originals Program. This workshop series will be a pre-requisite to joining our KIDSTAGE Originals Writing Team in 2025-2026. Our KS Originals program selects a small group of students who write and create a brand-new original musical that is created from initial concept to staged reading.

For this workshop series, we are specifically looking for emerging writers, composers, and lyricists, and for creative students that are interested in learning more about these disciplines. We have compiled a top-notch teaching team. We hope students will sign up for the entire series, but you can also participate in just one or two of the workshops. Students who participate will also receive a complimentary student ticket to our Mainstage productions of Camelot and Legally Blonde. These scripts/scores (along with some additional selected musicals) will be used as reference material for the workshop series.

WORKSHOP APPLICATION

The application is just a chance for our Workshop Instructors to know more about you and to tailor their curriculum accordingly.

Successful members of the KIDSTAGE Originals Workshop Series possess the following qualities:

• A passion for writing and telling stories or creating and composing songs
• The willingness to collaborate and compromise as necessary on differing ideas or viewpoints
• The ability to manage and advocate for their personal schedule
• The motivation and time to commit to a few hours a week writing outside of the scheduled workshops.
• Access to a laptop with a word-processing program (Google Docs, Microsoft Word, etc.) Please let us know if you do not have access to a laptop at home, and KIDSTAGE can help procure one for your usage.

KIDSTAGE Originals is an original musical project created by emerging theatre artists. Students generate their own original material under the mentorship and guidance of a professional writing, composing, and directing team.

Once the Writing Team has completed a script, student actors are added to the process and the show is shared with an audience for feedback regarding their script and story. This program is designed to teach students about the process of creating a show from script to stage, and provide students the life skills of collaboration, compromise, communication of ideas, and receiving critical responses to creative endeavors, among many others.

KIDSTAGE Originals productions are written by, for, and about teens, and can address some of the most important issues to teens today. Past KIDSTAGE Originals shows include: Last Exit, In Your Eyes, Save As…, Hot Mess, Playing Fair, This is What They Tell Me, Sincerely Yours, Out of Bounds, and All That Glitters – A Rock Legend.

Being part of at least one of the workshops we are offering in 2024-2025 will be a pre-requisite to be on the writing team for 2025-2026.
