- How to Write a Musical: Thursdays, September 26 to October 17 – 4:00 – 7:00 p.m.
À la carte Tuition (Writing Class Only): $260
They say “nothing’s as amazing as a musical,” but what is the recipe to create a successful musical? This workshop invites you to bring your passion and love of theatrical musicals and delve into what makes a musical work (or not!). We will explore the history and evolution of the musical; and, through the lens of the existing musical theater canon, we will discuss the theory of musical structure, song structure, and story-writing to build a foundation and set you on your path to writing your very own musical. Taught by Joel Arpin.
- Lyrics for Musical Theater: Thursdays, October 24 to November 21 – 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. (no class on 10/31)
À la carte Tuition (Lyrics Class Only): $180
Anyone can write lyrics for a song — but it takes a special love of stories and audiences to craft lyrics for musical theater. This workshop brings together your belief in the power of words, your quest to move others through music, and your love for creating a little bit of (on stage) drama. We will consider multiple approaches to weaving character, action and language into song lyrics — and learn more about our own unique creative processes along the way. Taught by Orlando Morales.
- Song Writing for Musical Theater: Saturdays, January 4-25 – 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.
À la carte Tuition (Songwriting Class Only): $260
In this class we will cover the basics of songwriting from an acting-driven perspective. We will learn the ins and outs of different kinds of songs that exist in musicals. We will also learn how to transcribe sheet music, study the conductor scores of popular musicals, and create our own original songs from inspiration to lyric sheets, to full piano/vocal score for theater. The culmination of this workshop will include getting your original song ready to submit to a national high school song-writing competition. Taught by David Taylor Gomes.
