Script Submissions
Village Theatre produces five musicals and plays every year in our mainstage season, both classic and contemporary. Each season includes existing canonical musicals and plays while often serving multigenerational audiences and presenting new work. Our new works program produces an annual Festival of New Musicals and will often also feature readings, residencies, workshops, and developmental productions throughout the year.
Village Theatre accepts unsolicited script and demo packages of new musicals yet to have a commercial New York run or to be represented by a licensing house that fall into one of these categories:
- Musicals submitted by agents or commercial producers;
- Musicals by BIPOC writers;
- Musicals by writers who have at any point in their career won or been finalists for any of the following: Richard Rodgers Award, Jonathan Larson Grant, Kleban Prize, Fred Ebb Award, Relentless Award, O’Neill Center, NAMT Festival, Goodspeed Festival of New Musicals, Vivace Award, Marvin Hamlisch Award, ASCAP Plus Award, Idea Awards for Theatre, Stephen Schwartz Award;
- Past participants at any point in their career in Rhinebeck Writers Retreat, Dramatists Guild Fellowship, Johnny Mercer Songwriters Project, Goodspeed Musicals Johnny Mercer Writers Grove, MTF Makers Lab, NYU Grad Musical Theatre Writing Program, BMI Lehman Engel Workshop, Temple Grad Musical Theatre Collaboration Program, Yale Institute for Music Theatre, Theater Latté Da NEXT Festival, American Music Theatre Project, Berkeley Rep/The Ground Floor, Denver New Play Summit, Goodman New Stages Festival, Humana Festival, Powerhouse New Works Play Festival.
We accept new musicals only. We do not accept submissions of new plays. Plays will not be read or considered.
Due to the volume of scripts we receive and our desire to respond to writers with care and promptness, Village Theatre is unable to accept any other unsolicited submissions of new work. This includes letters of inquiry, synopses and dialogue samples.
Before submitting, it may be helpful look at our current and past programming to get a better understanding of our producing interests.
TO SUBMIT, please include the following:
- A short synopsis of the musical
- A demo package of at least five demos (any level of demo is fine – does not need to be fully produced)
- A short script sample with any context needed to understand the scene
**AGENTS AND PRODUCERS MAY SUBMIT A FULL SCRIPT**
Agent- or producer-submitted scripts, BIPOC-authored musicals, and writers from the awards, festivals, or training/residencies we have listed should be emailed to scriptsubmissions@villagetheatre.org. Please indicate in your email heading under which category your submission is eligible.
