Behind the Ticket: How Doors Open Expands Access
Keeping the Performing Arts Accessible
Every season, Village Theatre welcomes tens of thousands of people through its doors. Longtime subscribers, first-time attendees, students at a school matinee, teens with their friends, a pay-what-you-choose attendee, or a complimentary ticket provided through a community partnership.
All of these audiences can attend because Village has a supported belief that the performing arts should be accessible. What is less visible is the investment required to make that access possible.
Through King County’s Doors Open program, administered by 4Culture, Village Theatre is receiving support that advances two important goals at the same time: expanding public access to the arts and maintaining the organizational stability needed to serve our community well into the future. Doors Open was established to increase support for arts, heritage, science, and historic preservation organizations throughout King County, creating new opportunities for residents to engage with culture close to home.
This year, Village Theatre received a $135,000 Public Free Access grant that helps support every ticket priced at $10 or less. That funding supports programs such as TeenTix, pay-what-you-can opportunities, complimentary access initiatives, and student access. The result is simple: more people can experience live theater regardless of their financial circumstances. The grant is expected to support more than 7,000 discounted or complimentary tickets across King County this year.
The impact extends far beyond any single program.
Village Theatre serves more than 50,000 people annually through hundreds of performances, educational experiences, and community events. Throughout the year, Mainstage productions, youth education programs, and training opportunities are happening simultaneously across multiple theatres and production spaces. For many audience members, an affordable ticket is the first step toward discovering a lifelong relationship with the arts.
Rather than focusing on a single audience segment, Village Theatre uses these access programs to welcome a broad range of community members. The goal is both accessibility and audience growth: creating meaningful opportunities for new audiences to engage with live theatre while ensuring that cost is not a barrier to participation.
But affordable tickets tell only part of the story.
Behind every seat in the theatre is a complex ecosystem of artists, educators, technicians, stage managers, box office staff, front-of-house teams, facilities employees, and accessibility services working together to create a successful experience. While Public Free Access funding helps reduce the cost of attendance, the larger Doors Open investment in Village Theatre provides something equally important: stability.
Through the Doors Open Sustained Support program, Village Theatre received a three-year general operating award that includes more than $500,000 in funding for 2026. Unlike project-specific grants, these funds can be used where they are needed most, supporting artist and production wages, utilities and facility operations, accessibility services, and the day-to-day costs that keep performances, classes, and community programs running.
This unrestricted support arrives at a critical moment for cultural organizations throughout the region. As production and operating costs continue to rise, general operating funding provides flexibility that allows Village Theatre to maintain access initiatives while continuing to invest in artistic excellence. In practical terms, it helps ensure that reducing the price of a ticket does not mean reducing the quality of the experience.

Doors Open funding represents a significant and forward-looking public investment in King County’s cultural sector, but it is only one part of the picture. Public funding helps expand access and strengthen operations, yet it does not replace the support of individual donors, foundations, corporations, or other community partners. In fact, each source of support plays a distinct role in sustaining the artistic experiences our community values.
For Village Theatre, the true impact of Doors Open can be measured in both numbers and experiences: thousands of affordable tickets, a stronger foundation for artistic work, and more opportunities for people across King County to participate in the cultural life of their community.
Because access begins with a ticket, but it depends on the funding, the people behind it.
