Celebrating the 2026 Festival of New Musicals

The curtain has come down on Village Theatre’s 23rd Annual Festival of New Musicals. We’ve adapted and changed the schedule, but the core and the heart of this incredible weekend remains the same and the excitement generated continues long after the final applause. Over three days, audiences filled our theatres, artists shared their work, and our community gathered to celebrate what makes the Festival so special: the chance to experience the future of musical theater as it is being created.

From the first reading on Friday evening through Sunday’s final matinee, there was an unmistakable energy at Village. Patrons packed the houses, laughter echoed through the theatres, standing ovations greeted artists after performances, and friends reunited in the lobby before rushing to find their seats. The Festival once again demonstrated what has made Village Theatre a national leader in new musical development for decades: a community that believes in the power of new stories and is willing to invest in bringing them to life.

Engaging with Creativity

While audiences experienced the excitement on stage, Festival Supporters and Investors enjoyed unique opportunities to engage more deeply with the creative process. Throughout the weekend, Village Theatre hosted four special donor events featuring artists and artistic staff in conversation about the journey of creating a new musical. These panel discussions offered guests rare insight into the challenges, discoveries, and collaboration involved in developing work from an initial idea into a piece ready to be shared with an audience. Hosted by the Development team in the rehearsal hall, these gatherings created space for meaningful connection and deeper understanding of the artistic process.

For many attendees, these conversations become an important part of the Festival experience. Hearing directly from writers, composers, lyricists, and artistic leaders provided context that enriched the readings themselves and highlighted the immense talent, curiosity, and perseverance required to create new work.

Opening Doors

Support from individual donors and sponsors provides the foundation that allows Village Theatre to present the Festival each year. Their generosity helps ensure that emerging and established artists have a place to develop ambitious new work while keeping tickets accessible so that as many people as possible can participate in the process. The Festival is a reminder of the important role audiences play in development. Every reading invited attendees to share their thoughts and reactions, helping writers learn what resonated, what surprised audiences, and what ideas may continue to evolve. The live and written conversations between artists and audiences is central to the Festival’s mission and an essential part of the path from first reading to future production.
