Inside Village Theatre’s Festival of New Musicals

For one electrifying August weekend each year, Village Theatre transforms into a creative laboratory—scripts in motion, melodies mid‑flight, and artists shaping stories that may one day reach stages across the country. Its our annual Festival of New Musicals, where audiences don’t just watch theater—they witness, experience, and participate in the future of new musicals.

Now in its 23rd year, the Festival returns to Issaquah August 7–9, 2026, offering staged readings of four brand‑new musicals from some of the nation’s most exciting writers and composers. It’s a weekend designed for theater‑lovers who are curious, adventurous, and eager to say “I saw it when…”.

How New Musicals Are Born

Unlike a fully staged production, Festival readings strip away sets and costumes to spotlight the story, the score, and the spark between performers, creators, and the audience. Professional actors bring each musical to life before a live audience, giving writers invaluable insight into what’s resonating—and what’s ready for refinement.

For patrons, the experience feels intimate and immediate. You’re not just attending a performance—you’re part of a creative conversation.

The Festival Within the Festival

While all audiences enjoy the thrill of discovery, some Festival supporters experience an extra layer of access—moments that feel like slipping through a side door marked “Insiders Only.”

During Festival weekend, donors who support New Works are invited to behind‑the‑scenes panels with writers and composers, where creative teams talk candidly about inspiration, process, and the realities of developing new musicals today. These conversations pull back the curtain on questions theatergoers often wonder about: How long does it take to write a musical? What changes between draft one and draft ten? What does success really look like?

Another highlight is the aptly named “Festival Inside Scoop” event—a casual, insider gathering where supporters connect with Village Theatre leadership to hear all about what is coming over Festival weekend. This is a chance to get excited about the readings and learn a bit more about why they were selected for this year’s event.

At the highest support levels, Festival investors even enjoy intermission toasts with theatre leadership, turning a pause between readings into a celebration of shared commitment to the art form’s future.

Why These Perks Matter

These Festival experiences aren’t about exclusivity for its own sake. They reflect something deeper: the reality that new musicals can’t happen on their own.

Developing original work requires time, space, artists, and the freedom to take creative risks. Donations supporting the Festival help pay our artists, support rehearsal time, and the developmental infrastructure that allows bold ideas to grow into viable productions. In return, supporters are invited closer to the process and invited to learn more about what it takes for musicals to develop from an idea, to the page, to the stage.

An Invitation for the Curious

You don’t need to be an industry insider—or even a longtime donor—to fall in love with the Festival of New Musicals. All it takes is curiosity and a willingness to experience theatre in its raw, exhilarating early stages.

For some patrons, attending the Festival sparks something more: a desire to return next year, to join a panel discussion, or to support a musical they believe in. Village Theatre makes it easy to take that next step, with New Works support levels that open doors to deeper engagement while directly fueling the art onstage.

However you choose to participate, the Festival offers something rare and powerful: the chance to be present at the very beginning.

Because before a musical becomes a Broadway hit, a cult classic, or the cast recording you have on repeat—it starts right here, in a room full of possibility.
