DEIA Training - Village Theatre

DEIA Training

Dear Village Theatre colleagues,

Village Theatre requires antiracism orientation for all staff (full-time and part-time), artists, technicians, and front of house staff. This orientation was developed in collaboration with Michael Bobbitt, who originally created similar training for New Repertory Theatre and who currently serves as Executive Director at Mass Cultural Council in Boston.

The orientation is self-paced and features articles, videos, and reflection questions. There is no need to write down your responses to the reflection questions unless it is helpful to your learning style. We won’t be collecting answers. There are also additional resources at the end of each unit; reading or watching these will take you beyond the two-hour estimate and the scope of what we are requiring, but can be very helpful for further learning.

There are two orientations, one for people who are white and one for people of color/people of the global majority. If you are white, please complete that orientation. If you are a person of color/global majority, you have the choice to do either orientation. Both orientations share foundational materials, and the orientation for people of color/global majority also includes sections on Understanding Racial Trauma, Self-Care for BIPOCs, Unpacking Internalized Racism, Racial Joy & Pride, and Tools for Conflict De-Escalation. Both take the same length of time to complete.

Even if you have encountered similar ideas before, we request that you approach the materials with a fresh perspective. Select the orientation that you will be completing and begin by reading the introductory note from Michael Bobbitt at the top of each orientation. At the end of the orientation page, you must fill out the linked form to certify that you have completed this orientation. Please do not forget this step, or we will not have a record of your participation and you may be required to complete this orientation again.

Thank you for joining us in keeping Village Theatre a safe place to work for everyone.

When and how do I complete this training?

To complete this training, you will need a device (laptop, tablet, smartphone, etc.), an internet connection, and headphones.

  • In a rehearsal room: This orientation is part of the first day of rehearsal for actors, directors, and stage management staff. You will complete it during your rehearsal call.
  • Designers & other artistic contractors: This orientation is part of the first day of rehearsal for actors, directors, and stage management staff. Designers and other artistic contractors are invited to bring a device and headphones to complete it along with the rehearsal room team or we encourage you to complete it on your own time.
  • Full & part time staff: This orientation is part of your work and should be completed while you are “on the clock.” If you have not already, you should discuss the timeline for completing this and how it will interact with your other duties with your supervisor.
