The Sixth Annual Festival Of New Musicals: August 3-6, 2006

The Annual Festival of New Musicals has proven to be the starting point for some of our most popular new musicals. Girl of My Dreams, which was part of the 2005-2006 Mainstage Season, made its Village Theatre debut at the Third Annual Festival in August of 2003. The Wedding Banquet made its first public appearance at the Second Annual Festival in August of 2002 before going on to performances in Asia, New York, and the Village Theatre Mainstage. Ya Got Trouble!, which had a developmental production at First Stage in May and June of 2005, was the opening reading at the Third Annual Festival in 2003. Many recent Village Originals workshops and developmental productions, from Emma and Company, to Bonnie and Clyde, to Six Wives, all began at the Festival. Last summer's Festival celebrated five years of the most exciting new musicals event in the Puget Sound.

An all-new, lovingly adapted musical version of Louisa May Alcott's beloved novel brings the timeless tale of the March family to vivid life. In a time of war and want, Jo, Meg, Amy, and Beth grow from girls into women, guided by their mother, Marmee, through romance and loss, illness and courtship, growing up, and letting go. The melodic, moving Richard Rodgers Award-winning score by Kim Oler and Alison Hubbard has an intimacy and an honesty that's matched by the wise, faithful adaptation by Sean Hartley (Cupid and Psyche). 5:00 PM: Panel Discussion: Movies to Musicals
How do interstellar starfighters and baseball fields and Staten Island go from the screen to the stage? Find out in this year's panel discussion.

From Hairspray to The Producers to The Full Monty to Thoroughly Modern Millie to SPAMALOT, Broadway has been looking West for new musicals. But how is a movie made into a musical? And once a writer has picked a project, how do you make a movie sing, dance, and strut its stuff? Join us for a fun, fascinating discussion with:

  • Jonathan Betuel, original screenwriter of The Last Starfighter
  • Skip Kennon and Fred Landau, authors of the musical The Last Starfighter
  • Roy Rogosin, author of the musical Field Of Dreams, based on the film
  • Kim Oler and Alison Hubbard, composer and lyricist of Buddy's Tavern, based on the film Two Family House.

7:30 PM: Field of Dreams
Book, Music, and Lyrics by Roy M. Rogosin
From the screenplay by Phil Alden Robinson
And the novel by W. P. Kinsella

"If you build it...he will come." Iowa farmer Roy Kinsella hears a voice in his cornfield, and takes the message to mean he's meant to build a baseball field on his farm. So he does, risking his house and home, but his adventure's only beginning — it takes a trip to see a reclusive author and a visit from the ghost of Shoeless Joe Jackson (and the rest of the shamed 1919 Chicago White Sox) to help Roy understand the meaning of that mysterious message and the true purpose of his glorious field.

2:00 PM: The Big Deal
The Big Ending by Shrubshall and Free
The Big Beginning
Book and lyrics by Scott Guy
Music by Ross Kalling

It's two fast and funny musicals in one! From the acclaimed Stages Festival in Chicago comes a hilarious double-bill of intertwined one-acts about dying producers and dead playwrights. In The Big Ending, a musical theatre impresario with a brain tumor is disturbed to discover everyone around him suddenly breaking into song. In The Big Beginning, a playwright's surviving sister tries to get her brother's show produced without compromising the integrity of the work. Hah! In theatre? Good luck!

This incredible true story will set your toes tapping! On December 6, 1956, at Sun Studios in Memphis, legendary record producer Sam Phillips brought together four legends-to-be in one room: Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis Presley, and Johnny Cash. They played, talked, played, joked, played, argued, and played all night — quickly christened the "Million Dollar Quartet," they made music history. Part jam session, part bull session, and all rock-and-roll, this one's bound for big things — you won't want to miss its debut!
