Village Originals

The Development of New Musicals

Village Originals is about...
  • Innovation
  • Finding the next big thing
  • New musicals

Through our Village Originals programs of residencies, readings, workshops, and full productions, we have one of the most comprehensive new musicals program in the country—no other regional theatre has as much dedication to finding and developing the next great American musical.

Developing new musicals takes time and money. Through Village Originals we involve our audience at every step of the way as we take shows from concepts to rough drafts to workshops to world premieres, but only Members are there from the beginning. We invite our Members to presentations of material and gain feedback and response in collaboration with the artistic department to help these new musicals mature and grow throughout our process. This is an inside look into the process—sometimes pretty, sometimes ugly, always compelling—that only our Members get.

Have you always wanted to see how new musicals work? Want a behind the scenes look at the development of a musical? Want to be the first to see the next big thing? Then Village Originals is for you.

VO PROGRAMS OVERVIEW

Annual Festival of New Musicals
The Festival of New Musicals is a one-of-a-kind opportunity to see a new musical before it gets any staging, costumes or sets. In the Festival, five new musicals are presented in staged readings—rehearsed, on-book presentations of new works—over a summer weekend full of parties, events, and new musicals. This is a national industry-only event that Village Originals Members are given exclusive access to.

The Beta Series

This is a three-show series of workshop productions of fully-produced, staged performances but with a twist—these productions include simple sets and costumes so creative teams are not hindered by complicated technical elements and are able to make big, bold changes every performance based on audience response over a few weekends. No two shows are alike! Audiences are encouraged to attend the show multiple times to see the changes made.
Please contact Village Theatre’s Box Office to purchase tickets to The Beta Series.

Writer Residencies

The earliest stage of development, writers are flown to Seattle and housed on site at Village Theatre for a week of concentrated writing and workshopping to help complete a first draft. They are provided artistic support, rehearsal space, and professional actors so they can hear their work read aloud for the first time. Producer’s Circle Level Members are invited to select Residency Presentations throughout the year.

Staged Readings

Select staged readings are presented throughout each season as stand-alone, one-night-only events for most Village Originals Members.

Member Feedback

As a Member you have the opportunity to actively participate in the development of these new musicals by giving feedback throughout the process. Audience talkbacks are led by our Associate Artistic Director, Brandon Ivie, and written feedback and surveys are encouraged at every level of development.
